Mauritius

The island that has it all: turquoise beaches, volcanic mountains, mixed cultures and the world's most spectacular underwater waterfall

Mauritius is the island that has it all. Postcard beaches with turquoise lagoons, volcanic mountains covered in jungle, a unique cultural mix of Indian, African, Chinese and European influences, and natural phenomena that seem like science fiction.
Mauritius is different from the Maldives or Seychelles: it's not just beach. It's an island with personality, with interior to explore, a vibrant Creole culture and gastronomy reflecting its history as a crossroads between Asia, Africa and Europe. The famous Le Morne "underwater waterfall" isn't really a waterfall: it's an optical illusion created by sand sediments dragged by currents toward the oceanic abyss. Viewed from a helicopter, it looks like water falling into the depths. It's one of the planet's most photographed natural phenomena. But Mauritius has much more: Black River Gorges National Park with tropical forest and waterfalls, Chamarel's seven-colored earth, Hindu temples inland, Port Louis with its bustling central market, and spectacular beaches like Belle Mare, Trou aux Biches or the Le Morne Brabant peninsula, a World Heritage Site.
